Facilities that receive surface inflow (e.g. Bioretention) are vulnerable to surface erosion and the formation of rivulets. Green roofs can lose exposed planting material from wind scour. These soure of erosion should be mitigated by using erosion control blankets.
Blankets which incorporate a non-biodegradable plastic mesh become unsightly when vegetation emerges in summers following installation. Even before vegetation lifts the mesh, it can snare and kill any passing small wildlife.
Alternatives including 100% biodegrade blankets or soil tackifiers are recommended for erosion control in and around LID facilities.
